Xiaoya weds Wukong - A match made by zookeepers

main-monkey-wedding-photo.jpgMy girlfriend once told me that the road down the aisle is paved with good intentions, but only if you walk it wearing the perfect dress.

I’ve always disagreed with her on the issue of wedding dresses and this has really strained our relationship.

Perhaps Antoinette needs to borrow a leaf from two monkeys who recently wedded in a special ceremony held at a zoo in Wenling, China.

Wukong, a 7-year-old male monkey and a 6-year old female monkey named Xiaoya (pictured) seem to have understood that there is more to a wedding than the dress.

The fact that Xiaoya’s dress wasn’t the right size didn’t deter the two lovebirds from flamboyantly walking down the red carpet to the zoo’s centre stage from where they tied the knot. Read the rest of this entry »

12 Great Places You Must Visit in Africa Before You Die - Pictures

1. Abu Simbel in Egypt

Abu simbel temples Egypt

The two temples at Abu Simbel Egypt are best known for two reasons: their dazzling magnificence, and their historic relocation from their original cliff. These monumental temples were originally carved out of a sandstone cliff near River Nile over three millenniums ago, during the reign of the great Pharaoh - Ramesses II. The temples were dedicated to the Egyptian gods and to Pharaoh Ramesses II.

Recently, in the 1960s, when the Egyptian government was constructing the Aswan High dam, the temples faced the danger of being submerged under the resultant Lake Nasser. The Egyptian government sought the assistance of UNESCO and the international community to help salvage and relocate the temples to an artificial mountain. The relocation entailed dismantling the two temples then reassembling them in exactly the same form and relationship to each other and to the sun. In their new location, the temples are surrounded by an artificial mountain. A photo exhibition of this historic relocation can be seen at the dome at Abu Simbel.

Snow in Kenya

snow in kenya

Is this how “snow” taste?..This man seems to be contemplating…

Sorry, it was not snow but a thick blanket of hailstones that fell in some remote village in Kenya and confused many Kenyans who thought snow had fallen for the first time in Kenya. Bewildered village residents were astonished to find that a fairly thick carpet of hailstones had fallen on their land suddenly.

Snow in Kenya is only found on Mount Kenya. One media house reported that the hailstones had fallen over an area of 100 acres and had caused widespread damage to food crops.

Many villagers were astonished at the incident because it was the first time they were witnessing such an event.

One resident joked and said they thought “Jesus had come back”. I captured some of the images below from videos on the internet..

Christian the lion - an amazing reunion

Ever imagined hugging an African Lion! The true story of Christian the Lion illustrates how man and animal can be true friends. In 1969, Rendall and Bourke-two Australians-adopted a Lion cub and took it to London. Later, the Lion, Christian, became too big and had to be reintroduced to the African wild. Here is a video showing the reunion between these old friends, one year after Christian was sent back into the Kenya wild.

Africa Point Targets Local Tourists in East Africa

PRESS RELEASE

Travel Club to Bring Discounts to Domestic Tourists

Kenyan and East African residents have long been annoyed by the fact they at times pay considerably more than foreign tourists for their holidays in Kenya. In fact, the Kenya Tourism Board has reported that UK tourists visiting Mombasa may pay as much as 50% less than locals for the same hotel. Though conspiracy theorists may believe otherwise, the reason for this is that foreign tourists usually buy through travel aggregators who deliver numbers to the hotels and in turn are able to negotiate substantial discounts. Kenya Wildlife Services set to increase park fees

Kenya Wildlife Services(KWS) announced that it might be increasing park entrance fees to its national parks. What this literally means is that the cost of going on a safari to see game in Kenyan national parks will increase. The minister for tourism in Kenya raised concerns over this move as the tourism industry has not yet fully recovered from the post election violence that shook the nation early this year.

Neighboring Tanzania has been increasing park fees since last year to as high as $60 per person. In Tanzania they also introduced a fee for crossing the Ngorongoro crater tourists that are passing.

The surprising thing is that even with increase in park fees and  other miscellaneous costs in Tanzania, many lodges continue to experience full bookings. Seems people have more money to spend than i thought
