My country Kenya is one of the most peaceful countries in Africa and is often touted as a model of democracy for Africa. Kenya is also a hot tourist destination with fairly well developed tourism sector. On December 27th Kenyans went to the polls to elect their new president. The general election was hotly contested with two main contenders for the presidency ie, Mwai Kibaki(PNU) and Raila Odinga (ODM)
By 30th Dec the two individuals were neck to neck in the tallying of the results and tensions were rising across the country. Mr Mwai Kibaki was eventually declared the winner which then triggered massive riots and social unrest across the country with the supporters of ODM claiming their was massive rigging.
A lot of people have lost their lives across the country due to the unrest and thousands of families displaced due to tribal instigated clashes. As i write this post the situation has calmed down but a bit and the relief efforts are already underway to help the victims of the unrest get back to their normal lives. Our prayer is that God will restore our peaceful nation to where it was once before.

By now you must be well aware that the Great Wilderbeest Migration has been named as one the new Seven Wonders of the World. We did research and with the help of my great assistant Lynette, came up with this report that delves into much greater details regarding this spectacular natural phenomenon that occurs every year between Kenyan and Tanzania.
This is one event that you will not want to miss when you tour East Africa. Millions of Wilderbeests, spurred on by natural instinct, begin to move from the Serengeti in Tanzania relentlessly tracked by Africa’s great predators and cross through the crocodile infested Mara River that borders the two countries to forage for food in Masai Mara covering a distance of over 1,800 miles. To read more about this phenomenon, download our Maasai Mara Wilderbeest Migration report for free

Movies and television series have painted Africa as a picturesque continent full of wildlife, exotic plants, and a host of indigenous tribes with their own unique traditions and rituals. While this may be true, the continent is no stranger to the worldwide demand to keep up with the times. Therefore, Africa is also no stranger to the fact that there are certain species being pushed to the brink of extinction as an effect of urbanization.
It is good to know that there are groups that push for the preservation of such species. The most notable organization devoted to this purpose is the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). One of its valuable contributions is the Red List, a detailed record of endangered plants and animals around the world. Species under the Red List are placed under categories which are defined based on actual population and factors affecting a species’ decline, among other statistics.
Here are two African Animals which are under the ‘Critically Endangered’ category of the IUCN Red List: Read the rest of this entry »

The other day I saw an interesting cartoon in the local daily newspaper of Queen Elizabeth shaking hands with an Aids victim for the first time in Uganda. What was interesting was the cartoon putting emphasis on her hands where she wore black gloves as she shook the person’s hand. I think the subtle message that was being passed in the cartoon was that she did not want to “contaminate” her hands.
The gloves might have been fashion accessories to complement her outfit but for some people they might have interpreted it differently. Queen Elizabeth was in Uganda to attend the Commonwealth heads of Government meeting. You can read the news item of her visit in Uganda here

I came across this amazing article in one of the local daily newspaper in the office. A 35 year old man by the name of Moses Lekalau slew a lion over the weekend armed only with a wooden club.
The report states that the Masai man was walking home on Saturday evening (17th Nov) when he was confronted by the lion. He struggled with the beast for half an hour before he finally killed it. Unfortunately, hyenas emerged from the bush after he killed the lion and started attacking him. Read the rest of this entry »

A South African man ofIndian-origin has been permanently denied entry into America because of his anti American ideologies. Adam Habib has been denied visas many times but it seems this time its permanent cause he’s been told he will never step onto the American soil again. Read more info here

According to a report I’ve just read from the BBC website released by conservation groups, nearly one third of the primates existing worldwide might face extinction due to destruction of their habitats.
The report, compiled by a team of 60 experts and presented at at the International Primatological Society (IPS) on the Chinese island of Hainan, reveals that Apes, Monkeys and primates are being pushed from their natural habitats or killed for food and medicines.
Read more on the world primates report here on the BBC site. This report made me reflect on our mountain gorillas in Africa commonly found in Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The animals are classified as being critically endangered species and they get killed as a result of poaching, habitat loss and diseases.
