Stone Town is filled with cobblestones and unyielding walls. What you are looking for is the wide open space of the sea. The long white stretch of sand north and south. Where you need to be right now is not in Stone Town, but far north, in Nungwi.
    
Nungwi is an old dhow making village. In recent times it has become rather busy. However, it is not impossible to find your own quiet spot. All you need is a little imagination and some patience. The beaches at Nungwi, despite the people, are especially pristine. The waters are so crystal clear that there is no way of differentiating between the turquoise of the ocean, and the deep, deep blue of the sky. No seaweed grown on this side of Zanzibar, swimming is less of a chore.
