Mombasa Beach Vacation - Sheshe Beach at South Coast

Working with a travel agent has its advantages. You get to visit exotic locations for free that you would otherwise have paid through your nose.

In my six years of working with Africa Point, i have been privileged to visit places like Severin Sea Lodge, Leopard Beach and Mara Lodge. This time round I went to check out Sheshe Beach hotel in Southern Coast of Mombasa in Kenya.

I was on a mission to check out the facilities of the hotel. Mombasa is a very humid place and the hot air was really getting to me. We were picked at the bus station and reached Sheshe beach hotel at 8.00am on Saturday. I took the Friday 10.45pm bus from Nairobi which took me 6 hrs on the road to reach Mombasa.

At the reception of the hotel we were met by a nice gentleman who assigned us our rooms.

I think we were the first to arrive because I couldn’t see any guests around. Kenyan tourism was really affected because of the post election violence that rocked the country early 2008 but the industry is slowly getting back to its feet. Tourism is very volatile in any nation of the world

After checking into my room i went and took a quick shower. The water pressure through the shower head wasnt much but hey, i am a patient person. I went to explore the beach and it was clean with very few beach boys hanging around (about 5). The few who are there are not allowed to come near the private beach area so its a relief compare to the North Coast of Mombasa which is teeming with these young men who can get on your nerves at times!!

During dinner on the first day i got to meet the other agents who had been invited and the other thing which i discovered is that none of them had heard of Sheshe beach hotel. The dinner was ok.

The following day were taken round to see the rooms. The first thing you notice is that their are not Tvs in the rooms. We were told that the management wanted to encourage family interaction and because Tvs are a such a huge conversation breaker, they have deliberately left them out to encourage family interaction. They also target honeymooners and as such offer offer honeymoon packages as well as wedding packages.

Accommodation at Sheshe consists of 24 ensuite rooms in blocks of 3, all with private verandahs facing the stunning  tropical gardens or the sea. All the rooms have individual colour schemes, hand carved hardwood furniture, walk in showers, ceiling fans, air conditioning, mosquito nets and phones

The phone in my room was not working but i raised up that issue with the management. They have six sea facing rooms. The seafront and superior seafront suites are a stone’s throw away from the beach and offer good views of the ocean. Other facilities include a swimming pool.

The other major highlight of the place is that Sheshe Beach is located about 15 minutes away from the River Congo that drains into the Indian Ocean..Its a spectacular site to watch and i uploaded a video i took on youtube.

This is something that you must see. I was very impressed myself

My impression is that the property would suit honeymooners very well. The place is well secluded and quite.

The downside is that the main entrance of the hotel (especially around the gate) needs a lot of renovation. Also, the website was a letdown coz it seems it was done by an amateur but i was pleasantly surprised to see they had updated it from scratch three days after i left the place.

Who would i recommend Sheshe beach to? For those planning a honeymoon as well as those who want to bond with their families in a quite location. Their rates are also competitive. Below are photos i took of the place
