Kenya Elections - Post Election Chaos
My country Kenya is one of the most peaceful countries in Africa and is often touted as a model of democracy for Africa. Kenya is also a hot tourist destination with fairly well developed tourism sector. On December 27th Kenyans went to the polls to elect their new president. The general election was hotly contested with two main contenders for the presidency ie, Mwai Kibaki(PNU) and Raila Odinga (ODM)
By 30th Dec the two individuals were neck to neck in the tallying of the results and tensions were rising across the country. Mr Mwai Kibaki was eventually declared the winner which then triggered massive riots and social unrest across the country with the supporters of ODM claiming their was massive rigging.
A lot of people have lost their lives across the country due to the unrest and thousands of families displaced due to tribal instigated clashes. As i write this post the situation has calmed down but a bit and the relief efforts are already underway to help the victims of the unrest get back to their normal lives. Our prayer is that God will restore our peaceful nation to where it was once before.
