Python Nearly Swallows Wallaby

python7.jpgThe city of Cairns, Queensland, Australia is becoming a battleground for some of the world’s deadliest animals.

The locals are witnessing fascinating battles such as snakes eating antelopes or spiders eating birds.

Recently, a hungry snake, estimated to be about 4m long, ambushed a hapless wallaby in at the James Cook University grounds.

The amethystine python tried to swallow a whole wallaby in the car park, enthralling students and staff, but before it completed its meal it found it had bitten off more than it could chew and gave up. Read the rest of this entry »

President Barack Obama Win - Kenyan Reaction

On the day President Barack Obama won the elections in America, i happened to be in town in Nairobi Kenya and was pleasantly surprised to meet a group of ecstatic crowd of fans who were singing and dancing in the streets. One might have thought the elections took place in Kenya judging by the media response and the near fanatical support he has in Kenya. Below is a video i took with my phone as i captured these precious moments

Obama’s Kenyan home ready to party

senator.jpgKogelo village in Western Kenya has turned into a beehive of activity as residents prepare to celebrate the victory of US president-elect Barack Obama, a man they consider one of their own.

News of Obama’s election as America’s 44th presidents was received with jubilation by residents of this sleepy village where the father of Obama was born and raised.

Many residents of Kogelo, both young and old, hope that an Obama presidency will translate into development of the area.

Already, there is one development that has spread smiles on the faces of the residents. The 5km dirt road that leads to the trading centre is undergoing a makeover and the locals believe this is just but the beginning.

Students at Senator Obama-Nyangoma Primary School - renamed after Mr Obama’s visit in 2006 are optimistic that their school will get new facilities while others believe the area will get electricity connection.

Hundreds of miles from Kogelo, residents of the Kenyan Capital, Nairobi are excited and a group of youths have marched around the main streets of the city singing in praise of the Democrat.

Earlier in the day the government of Kenya declared Thursday a public holiday in the honour of Mr Obama.

The party kicks off later Wednesday and a bull has been set aside at Kogelo to be slaughtered for the festivities while clubs and restaurants in Nairobi are selling their products at discounted rates. PHOTO/AFP

Kenyans Vote For Obama In Mock Polls

kisumu-mock-election.jpgA few hours before Americans commenced voting for their 44th President, residents of Kisumu city in western Kenya, where Democrat Barack Obama has ancestral roots, were so busy conducting a mock version of the US 2008 Election.

Staged by a couple of comedians, the ‘elections’ had two polling booths each bearing the pictures of the candidates; John McCain and Barack Obama.

As events unfolded Mr Obama’s queue grew longer as McCain’s had very few voters - a reflection that McCain was fairing badly. This prompted a McCain sympathizer to attempt voting twice but unfortunately the ‘law’ law caught up with him and he received a thorough beating from other ‘voters’ before police came to rescue.

Over 1500 people cast their ballots and they were optimistic that Mr Obama would win in the actual polls. PHOTO/AFP

Delta Buys Northwest To Create Largest Airline

delta-northwest-merger.jpg

Delta Air Lines swallowed rival Northwest Airlines Inc on Wednesday in a $2.6 billion merger that created the world’s biggest airline and prompted new speculation about further industry consolidation.

The all-stock transaction, the first domestic airline combination in three years, closed after clearing its biggest and last regulatory hurdle earlier in the day — U.S. Justice Department antitrust review.

Justice officials cited the likelihood of “substantial and credible efficiencies” without harming consumers or competition.

Government approval was expected. Industry vigorously made the case to regulators earlier this year, when airline finances were rockier than they are now, that consolidation was an important tool for remaining viable with fuel prices high and the economy worsening.

“The airline industry faces a very difficult economic environment around the world and this merger gives Delta increased flexibility to adapt to the economic challenges ahead,” said Richard Anderson, the Delta chief executive who will head the combined entity.

The new, larger Delta will be an international powerhouse with unparalleled scheduling and pricing strength with service to 375 cities worldwide, experts said. The company estimates a combined $2 billion in cost savings and revenue enhancements annually. Read full story here.

Global Tourism Feeling Effects Of Financial Crisis

tourists-watalii.jpgGlobal tourism is already feeling the effects of the financial crisis, slowing down over the northern summer this year, the United Nations tourism agency reports.

Warning that the industry could suffer a sharper downturn in the months ahead, the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) says consumer demand is falling in both the business and leisure tourism sectors.

The agency expects that tourism could be hit even harder over the remaining months of this year and the first half of 2009 as the slowdown filters through the global economy.

UNWTO’s executive council has agreed to set up a “resilience committee” to support public and private sector members with accurate economic analysis and response mechanisms.

The World Tourism Barometer, compiled by a UNWTO panel of experts, “now shows a perceptible loss of confidence regarding the short-term outlook,” the agency said in a press release. Read the entire story on The East African

Jerome Corsi: Anti-Obama author kicked out of Kenya

jerome-corsi.jpgA controversial American author and conspiracy theorist was arrested in Nairobi and deported yesterday after trying to plug his bestselling book attacking Barack Obama, whose late father was Kenyan.

Jerome Corsi (Photo/Reuters) arrived in the country last week to promote The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality, an error-riddled book that recently became a bestseller in the US.

It falsely claims that Obama, who is revered in Kenya, was raised as a Muslim, and smears the prime minister, Raila Odinga, the country’s most popular politician.
Corsi had said that he also planned to deliver a $1,000 (£570) cheque from a conservative website owner to George Obama, the presidential candidate’s half-brother who lives in the Kenyan capital’s Huruma slum.

Xiaoya weds Wukong - A match made by zookeepers

main-monkey-wedding-photo.jpgMy girlfriend once told me that the road down the aisle is paved with good intentions, but only if you walk it wearing the perfect dress.

I’ve always disagreed with her on the issue of wedding dresses and this has really strained our relationship.

Perhaps Antoinette needs to borrow a leaf from two monkeys who recently wedded in a special ceremony held at a zoo in Wenling, China.

Wukong, a 7-year-old male monkey and a 6-year old female monkey named Xiaoya (pictured) seem to have understood that there is more to a wedding than the dress.

The fact that Xiaoya’s dress wasn’t the right size didn’t deter the two lovebirds from flamboyantly walking down the red carpet to the zoo’s centre stage from where they tied the knot. Read the rest of this entry »
